In addition to the nine categories, a Consumer's Choice Award will be awarded to the establishment to have received the most (pro-rata based on size of the establishment) nominations for this award.

Criteria

And we’d like to know whether you’re getting just that. To help us judge all the entrants, we need your nominations. It’s quick and easy to do and if you feel you’ve had an outstanding experience with any of
the following categories:
  • an accommodation establishment
  • a meetings, exhibitions events venue
  • an online tour operator / planner
  • a travel agency
  • a national or private park
  • a restaurant
  • a tour operator
  • a tourist attraction
  • or a tourist guide

Tourist Attractions

 

Definition

A tourist attraction will be defined as a commercial establishment which is considered to be of significant importance to the local tourism industry and has a strong commitment to service tourists. A commercial tourist attraction can be operated as a private business, or by a non-profit or government agency.

Entry criteria

In order to be eligible for the Commercial Tourist Attraction Welcome Award, you must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate that tourism is clearly your core business activity, providing a substantial tourist experience as part of, or in addition to, the commercial/retail establishment's normal business.
  • Have all relevant province and local government licenses and approvals to operate as a commercial tourist attraction, including health plan, planning, parking and disabled access facilities.
  • Be a member of a recognised local or regional tourism organisation.
  • Be open on weekends and three other days of the week, including public holidays.
  • Clearly display opening times (if the attraction is not open 7 days)
    1. at the entrance to the property or establishment, and
    2. in brochures and all promotional collateral (advertisements, websites, etc.)
  • Be open between at least 10am and 5pm.
  • Have appropriately trained visitor contact staff.
  • Have a minimum amount of R10 million in TBA Public Liability Insurance cover
  • Be clean and well preserved at all times.
  • Have clean and conveniently located public toilet facilities.
  • During an official visit you will be required to submit the following:
    • visuals that serve as an example of how you exceeded expectations in making a guest feel special and welcome; and
    • any documents to support how you add value to your visitors' experiences.

The following types of business will not be considered commercial tourist attractions:

  • Nurseries and garden centres
  • Intangible or seasonal visitor activities like whale watching, skydiving, dive trails and the like.
  • Community recreational activities and facilities like golf courses, aquatic centres and similar establishments
  • Antique galleries or shops
